Negligence of Environmental Studies in new Curriculum:

 

With updated curriculum for 2014 Ministry of Education and Culture (MOEC) has added few new elements such as more focus in Religious Studies and Civics. Both are surely important for values systems along with Pancasila and Morals.  Indonesia is home of biodiversity and can play a major role in sustainability of environment around the world. There are three environmental goals that are critical to achieving sustainable societies that includes Preservation of Biodiversity, Excellent Water Quality and Healthy Air Quality and in general we have to do a little to manage this, if we make our way of life around these aspects. Education always ignites minds and if this study could be focused in school curriculum I could have spread more awareness about environmental protection and conservation. To be a good environmental stewards we need to focus in environmental studies and not including this in new curriculum if a kind of going back than to looking forward. Its true that bothclimate and weather feature can be understand throughout the geography curriculum but how to make connection between “human activity and natural processes that can lead to changes in the environment and can affect us heavily. It is now important tounderstand how human and natural processes interact to influence, and change landscapes, environments and the climate; and how human activity relies on effective functioning of dynamics of natural systems. This is the demand of changing world that middle and high school students should explore the effects of their everyday behavior has on the environment, their health, and their well-being, by this way we can produce and world citizen. Now its time to provide and challenge to the students to think about how the systems in our present society influence our lifestyle choices in ways that often are not good for environment. If government won’t show leadership around the Environmental issues and sustainability agenda in schools curriculum, it will be for citizen and policy makers themselves to take up the challenge as future belongs to these young minds. I would like to say that we need to make these students more concerned, than to not less.
